Your Coach,
Jeff Galloway
Jeff Galloway, you personal coach on the Athens Marathon Tour

While in Greece as a member of the 2008 Athens Marathon Tour, your coach will be world-famous running expert Jeff Galloway.
Jeff has been with our program since 1995.

Jeff is best known for writing Galloway's Book on Running, the best-selling running book in North America. A lifetime runner, he was a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team in the 10,000 and marathon, and enjoys a successful masters running career. He is CEO of Galloway Productions, producer of a wide range of fitness programs and events each year, and is the owner of Pheidippides, a national network of running specialty stores. He is also the author of Return of the Tribes, and a third book, entitled Marathon!

Read Jeff's monthly column on training in Runner's World, and check out his web site at jeffgalloway.com.

Here is Jeff's own description of what the Athens Marathon means to him, and why it's a running experience you'll never forget:

Somewhere over the Atlantic, at 35,000 feet, I felt an unexpected notion of anxiety. Here I was, headed back to Athens, Greece, for my second trip to the original marathon, where I had felt like a kid on his first trip to Disney World one year ago. Yes, I was concerned that it wouldn't be as engaging the second time. A year ago I had imagined what Phidippides would have seen as I covered the original marathon course, and was thrilled to think that I was walking over the same stones in the ancient city as Plato had done. Would the thrill be gone the second time around?

My answer came soon after our arrival when my oldest soon Brennan and I ran over some ancient messenger paths overlooking the Aegean Sea. Not only did the excitement of discovery return, it was magnified by the joy of sharing it with my son, and others in the group.

When you return to the cradle of Western Civilization your enthusiasm for fitness is revived as you experience the respect given to running and fitness in classical times. The Greeks of ancient Athens believed that running was important as an activity by itself, bestowing a wealth of benefits to the individual.

As I watched my younger son Westin, and others in the group, run over the same field used by athletes 2,500 years ago, I was invigorated. We experience the same endorphins, the same attitude boost, and the same self-respect generated by our individual runs, as our ancient predecessors. These benefits were magnified by the sharing of this experience in this very special place. I'm also convinced that the athletes of Phidippides time laughed at the guttural humor which erupts after or during a run.

The meaning of the visit was also enhanced by the great discussions generated by visits to areas that had been dots on the map or names we had to memorize for a history test. Everyone had an interesting story about how the touching of a stone, walking through Agamemnon's gate, or running on the trails Phidippides could have run, really touched them.

As humans, we're capable of absorbing a never-ending series of energizing thoughts and experiences from the same stimuli. Just standing on one of the sites can directly connect you with the many levels of enjoying life appreciated by the ancients. Running the original roads and trails magnifies the experience.

I'm looking forward to this years visit to the mecca of running. Will you join us?

Running Comments

Jeff Galloway: Almost any runner can finish strong in Athens.

Having worked with dozens of beginning runners who have "conquered" the Athens Marathon course, I can say that with the right pacing and
strategy, the Athens Marathon will not seem difficult at all. For 9
years I have helped runners train for and actually run this historic
course. Again this year, I'll be there to help you set a successful
strategy for a strong finish. Since there are many "once in a lifetime"
experiences on this trip, I don't recommend going for a personal
record--but several of our past participants have done this. You'll
share thoughts with fellow runners from all over the world, as you cover
the same ground trod by Phidippides in 490 BC--the route used in the
very first marathon race, in the very first modern Olympic Games. This
is truly a heritage experience for runners--one that you will remember
for the rest of your life.
